Designing with Sconces, Flush Mounts, and Pendants

Fixtures for the rest of your home

Layering a room in your house with lights is a great idea. Layers allow you to control the amount of light you want, depending on the task. You can also deliver light to particular areas of your room, less of an option with only one central fixture in the room. Layers of light also minimizes glare: an imbalance of extreme light and dark. Now, we will offer advice on when to use different kinds of fixtures in your home.

Wall Sconces

Wall Sconces are fixtures that attach to the wall of your room. Sconces are particularly useful when the ceiling is very high in a room. People are most familiar with sconces on the sides of a mirror. They are also often seen next to a fireplace, or at the side of a stairwell. This provides even lighting for your face. Sconces can provide task, accent, or general lighting.

Sconces should be hung at least 5' from the floor.

Tip: Some sconces with long tails or scrolls can be quite bulky.

Flush Mounts

Flush Mounts are placed on the ceiling, and don't hang off of a cord, stem, rod, or chain. They can be especially useful in low ceiling applications, and are more compact and weigh less than chandeliers. However, flush mounts have fewer bulbs that chandeliers.

Hallways and stairs are good uses for flush mounts. In particular, at the top of your staircase is a good use for a flush mount, as a circle of light at the top of the stairs can draw people towards that area.

Pendants

Pendants come in many different types. A mini pendant is the smallest of the bunch, and usually hangs off of a long cord or stem. The cord or stem may be adjustable at initial setup, so you can make the fixture work for you. You can also find many pendants with a bowl shape. You can find pendants made with a variety of materials, such as silk, crystal, and stainless steel. Pendants are a good choice for bars, or a multi-purpose kitchen table.
