If you go into a large remodeling project without a complete plan, you will end up spending a great deal of time and money on unexpected expenses that arise during the process. Reduce the cost of your utility bills by making a few improvements throughout your home to keep the heat in and the cold out during the winter, and the cold air in and the heat out in the summer. Test every opening in your home for air leaks and seal them accordingly. You may need to hire a professional contractor in order to obtain the appropriate tools needed for a diagnosis. Stop water leaks as soon as you notice the problem in order to prevent the growth or mold and mildew. If left untreated, these leaks can cause further damage, some of which include rot, paint failure, structural damage and health problems. Check throughout your home for areas that have leaks and seal them immediately. Other areas to inspect include high humidity areas, such as the bathroom. Create a passive solar home design. This type of home is when you install floors, walls and windows that are designed specifically to react to solar energy. In the winter, these aspects of your home are designed to hold onto the heat that is distributed from the sun, which lowers how much you will need to use your heater. On the other hand, in the summer, these aspects are designed to reflect heat so that your home stays as cool as possible. Install solar reflective roofs on top of your home to reduce the amount of heat that is transferred inside of your home. These types of roofs are designed to absorb less heat and reflect more sunlight than some of the other options that are available. Installing solar water heaters is another way for you to make your home more energy efficient. The two types to choose from include the passive water heater, which does not have circulating pumps and the active water heater that does. There are certain areas of your home that you can focus on that qualify you to receive the $500 tax credit cap. Remodel your exterior windows, including storm windows and skylights. Other improvements that qualify for this credit include roofs, exterior doors, insulation, water heaters, boilers, furnace, heat pump and the central air conditioner. All of the improvements you make should be expected to last at least five years in order to be eligible.
