Chandelier Sizing Guide - Buy and Install the Perfect Chandelier

Previously, chandeliers were only used for "power positions", such as over the dining room table or at the entrance of your home. They also used to be only for upscale homes. Now, chandelier lighting are fit for any room in any price range. Even corners and alcoves can benefit from a chandelier. However, it may be difficult to pick which chandelier works best for your home. Allow us to help you.

Dining Room Chandeliers have become increasingly popular for those people who entertain guests in their home. To pick the best size for your dining room chandelier, there are two different rules, depending on if you have a table:
 
No Table:
 
  • Measure the length and width of your room, in feet.
  • Then add those numbers together.
  • That sum is the number of inches the width of the chandelier
    will be.
  • The chandelier should be at least 4' away from the walls.

With Table:
 
  • Size your chandelier half of the width of your table.
     
    Seats at Dining Table: Chandelier Width:
    4 - 6 people 20" - 24"
    6 - 8 people 25" - 29"
    8 - 10 people 30" - 36"
  • For smaller spaces, consider mini chandelier lights
  • You can also double up your lighting on mini chandeliers in larger spaces.
  • It will be about 30" - 32" above the table top, and cannot not be in the way of anyone sitting at the table.
  • The chandelier should be at least 4' away from the walls.
 
For all chandeliers:
 
  • With a two story room, the chandelier should hang 10' to 11' above the floor.
  • If you are considering a crystal Chandelier for your high end home, Swarovski Crystal Chandeliers are the highest quality chandeliers available.
  • It is best to match the color on the chandelier to work with the rest of the room. If you have a lot of different finishes in the room, a good choice may be satin nickel or black chandeliers.
    • Satin Nickel chandeliers are usually a good choice with a contemporary room.
    • Consider a black chandelier with a modern styled room or home.

 

Foyer Chandelier

  • Measure the length and width of your room, in feet.
  • Then add those numbers together.
  • That sum is the number of inches the width of the chandelier should be.
  • For fixture height, follow this chart:

    12' 30" - 36"
    13' 32.5" - 39"
    14' 35" - 42"
    15' 37.5" - 45"
    16' and higher Over 40"
  • The bottom of your foyer chandelier light fixture is best to be at least 7' from the floor of your foyer.
  • If your foyer is two stories tall and there is a window above the front door, center the foyer chandelier so it can be seen from the outside.
  • For extra-large foyers, consider pairing wall sconces along with a candle chandelier. The sconces should be 6' - 8' apart and 5' from the floor. Add mini pendant lights for a complete layered lighting effect.

  • Chandeliers come in many different styles to accompany tour already styled home.
  • The most popular are contemporary glass chandelier lights.
  • Contemporary chandeliers usually have clean lines and a modern influence.
