How to Buy Ceiling Fans for Your Home

The ceiling fan has become an efficient climate control appliance used to create a "wind chill" effect in the warmer months and circulate heat evenly in the cooler months. Ceiling fans have evolved from an appliance to the decorative center piece for many rooms in the home.

Purchasing ceiling fans for your home can feel like a complicated process when beginning your search to find the perfect ceiling fan for your space. With thousands of ceiling fans to choose from online, how do you find the right fan for your space at a discount price? The following questions should narrow your ceiling fan search.

What Room will Your Ceiling Fan go in?

The first step to buy ceiling fan is knowing which room and what size room the fan will be for. Select the right sized fan for the right sized room to insure the best air movement. Also, note that air movement is the combination of blade size and shape, blade pitch, and motor performance.
  1. What is the Square Footage of your room? The square footage of a room is the room length multiplied by the room width (in feet). The below is a guide to the size of your ceiling fan diameter. Remember that there are many variables (blade size, blade pitch and motor) to what size fan should go in what size room.

  2. Will this ceiling fan go indoors or outdoors? If the fan will go on a patio, lanai, porch, or screened in area, you should narrow your search to outdoor ceiling fans
  3. If the ceiling fan will go indoors, what room will it be? A living room or great room ceiling fan should be a large ceiling fan. The master bedroom fan should have a silent fan motor with at least our four star rating for the perfect uninterrupted sleep.

What is your Ceiling Height?

To determine your ceiling height, measure the distance from the exact spot in the ceiling where the fan is to be installed to the floor directly underneath. For maximum energy savings and comfort, it is important to have the ceiling fan positioned at the appropriate height from the floor.
  1. Do you have a low ceiling? If your ceiling is under 7-1/2 feet, then narrow your search to hugger ceiling fans.
  2. Do you have a sloped or pitched ceiling? If you are installing the ceiling fan on a sloped or pitched ceiling, you should determine the degree of the angle by How to find Pitch or Slope of Your Ceiling? For most fans, if the ceiling slopes greater than 30 degrees and up to 45 degrees, you will need a Sloped Ceiling Kit.
  3. Will you need an extension downrod? With high ceilings, it is custom to lower the ceiling fan to a height that will make cool air circulation or heat reclamation more effective. This guide should help give you an idea of what size downrod will be necessary if any.

What Finish Ceiling Fan is Right for You?

There are a few basic rules of thumb when choosing a ceiling fan finish that is right for your home. The fan motor housing finish is usually chosen to match other metallic hardware in the room like door knobs, cabinet pulls, handles or table lamps. The fan blade finish (usually wood) should match furniture, flooring, or doors.

What Style is the Décor of Your room?

Ceiling fans come in home décor styles to match just about any room inside or outside your house. You should determine what style the room is, then chose the ceiling fan style based on the room style.
  • Contemporary - If your room has a clean architectural feel with brush nickel and bronze finishes, you should narrow your search to contemporary ceiling fans.
  • Traditional - If your room has a more formal feel with brasses and faux finishes, then you should narrow your search to traditional ceiling fans.
  • Tropical - If your space has a feel of the sunny Caribbean with rattan and palm leaf materials scattered about, then narrow your search to tropical fans.

The above questions should assist you to buy a ceiling fan that is appropriate for your home. If you have any unanswered questions or would just like to talk to someone about how to buy a ceiling fan, then feel free to call us at 1-(800) 724-5501 We are happy to assist.
